José Luis, you have recently been appointed as ECA General Counsel. What is your academic and professional background?
I hold an LLB from the Portuguese Catholic University; an LLM from Georgetown University and an MBA from IE Business School.
I started my career at a top tier law firm in Lisbon, where I was integrated in the Banking & Finance law department. While at the firm, I was seconded first to Citigroup and later to Santander. My training was therefore focused on commercial and finance law matters.
However, my goal had always been to work in sports and in 2011 I accepted an offer to join FIFA, where I worked first in the legal department of FIFA TMS and later in the Players’ Status Department. At FIFA, I developed mainly an expertise in dealing with cases of breach of contract between clubs and players.
