All EU Governments (Spain excepted) Make a Joint Declaration to Protect the European Sports Model


On 8 February 2024, a declaration by European sports ministers, led by their French counterparts, asked for a sports model based on solidarity, sporting merit and sport's impact on society. According to the declaration, most European sports ministers call on sports leaders and the European Commission to strengthen values-based and solidarity-based sports.

The European Super League, even if it came from a relatively favorable ruling before the European Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), is now facing tough opposition from all European Union members, except for Spain.

As the European Super League’s promoters scramble to get their tournament off the ground, the French Republic has won the support of most European Union member countries to issue a joint declaration to protect and endorse the “link between annual performance in national competitions and all European competitions.”
