European Super League Announced – Football Stakeholders React


On 18 April 2021, twelve European clubs officially announced that they had agreed to create and participate in a supranational Super League. Many European and world football stakeholders, including FIFA and UEFA, released public statements concerning the launch of this new competition.

At the eve of UEFA’s decision concerning the future of European club competitions post-2024, reports emerged on 18 April 2021 of plans for creating a breakaway European Super League involving tier 1 European sides. Finally, later that day, twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs came together to announce they had agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs:
