Women’s Football on the Cusp of a Premier League Boom?

The growth and success of women’s football in England in 2019 has been unprecedented, driven in part by the growth and commercialisation of the game globally, most notably through France’s staging of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup (the World Cup).

The World Cup served as a platform for the English national team, popularly known as the Lionesses, to showcase the potential of the game in England through their impressive run to the semi-finals, losing to eventual winners, the USA.

This positive momentum was carried forward domestically, with Women’s Super League (WSL) matches being played at clubs’ main stadiums for the first time - e.g. Stamford Bridge and the Etihad Stadium.

England’s semi-final loss to the USA had a global live audience of 43.6 million viewers[1], of which 11.7 million were from the United Kingdom alone.
