Women’s football has been gaining more and more fans, increasing its international dimension that tends to grow every day.
In Portugal, the growth of women’s football has kept pace with the international trend, and 2022 was a particularly landmark year for women’s football at the national level.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which we all regret, led to Russia’s exclusion from all UEFA competitions, which included the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022. As a result, Portugal managed to fill the vacancy left by the Russian team to participate in this competition (for the second time in its history).
After qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Euro, the national team players also qualified for the last play-off for access to the World Cup and achieved their best position in the women’s FIFA ranking (22nd place).
