Introduction

On 19 August 1995, the then Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen criticised Manchester United’s performance in a loss against Aston Villa on the first day of the 1995/1996 season, uttering the now folkloric phrase:

            “You can’t win anything with kids.”[1]

Hansen was proven wrong. Manchester United went on to win the Premier League and the FA Cup that season, with a team whose average age was 26 years and 137 days.[2]
