New Framework for Players' Release Ahead of 2023 Women's World Cup


On 17 May 2023, FIFA and the European Club Association (ECA) agreed on a new framework regarding the release of footballers for the upcoming 2023 Women's World Cup. Previously, the international calendar surrounding this competition was a point of contention for both stakeholders.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup starts on 20 July 2023; therefore, its mandatory release period commences on 10 July 2023, even though some member associations seemingly intend to call up their players as early as May 2023, which may be troublesome for the health of some players who could not get some rest.
