Introduction

The notion of “Multi-Club Ownership” refers to the situation in which a person or a company owns shares in more than one club. This is now quite common in football worldwide. One of the most recent examples is the City Football Group (City Group), which owns stakes in ten clubs[1], its flagship being Manchester City FC. The City Group now has a footprint across five continents and ten countries.

Although the City Group has been a source of attention recently, the notion of Multi-Club Ownership was developed in the 1990s and can take several forms, for different purposes.
