The UEFA Bid Process

Previous
Next
In the following article, an overview will be provided of the UEFA bidding process, highlighting certain legal considerations and challenges that remain.

Introduction

UEFA oversees the organisation of 21 international football competitions each year. The biggest and most visible are of course the UEFA EURO™ and the UEFA Champions League™. As part of the implementation of President Čeferin’s programme following his election in 2016, a new bidding process has been set up over the last few years to award UEFA’s final phase events.

A special dedicated project team was appointed to lead the process, with experts from across the organisation providing input for specific event-related matters. This year, 2019, marks the year in which the final tournaments of the UEFA youth competitions are also being appointed via the new bidding process - albeit in a simplified format.

Regulations, timelines and bidding phases

Each bidding process is governed by the UEFA Bid Regulations.
