The possible impacts of the new Article 14 bis of the FIFA RSTP in Brazil

FIFA recently sent to its affiliates the Circular no. 1625 with the amendments to the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (FIFA RSTP), that came into force on 1 June 2018. Among other modifications on the rules, a new Article 14bis has been included, in order to address the specific circumstances of termination of a contract due to overdue salaries. 

The Article 14bis of the FIFA RSTP provides:

“Article 14bis Terminating a contract with just cause for outstanding salaries:

1. In the case of a club unlawfully failing to pay a player at least two monthly salaries on their due dates, the player will be deemed to have a just cause to terminate his contract, provided that he has put the debtor club in default in writing and has granted a deadline of at least 15 days for the debtor club to...
