The NWSL’s Internal Crisis

For several months, scandals of sexual abuse and emotional harassment have rocked the NWSL and its leaders. This article looks at the situation and discusses ways of improving the NWSL internal structure.

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is the top-division women’s soccer league in the United States. Established in 2012, the NWSL recently concluded its ninth season following an exciting championship match between the Washington Spirit and Chicago Red Stars where the Spirit’s Kelley O’Hara scored on a header in extra time at the 97-minute mark, breaking the 1:1 tie and clinching the Spirit’s first national championship. Although the stadium was filled with jubilation and smiles as the team hoisted the NWSL Championship Trophy after the match, fan signage within the stadium demanding that the Washington Spirit majority owner sell his interest in the team was a stark reminder of the scar that had been left on the season and NWSL as a whole by the slew of disturbing reports released throughout the year bringing to light not only damning allegations of sexual coercion and verbal and mental abuse...
