The MCO model is based on the internationalisation of the brand through the creation of a network of clubs, where expertise and best practice is shared, together with sponsorship strategies and sporting vision. In particular, the acquisition of new clubs results in an improved scouting network, new commercial opportunities and partnerships, new academies to develop young talent and the possibility to enhance the engagement of new fans. Such arrangements used to be on a partnership level, most prominently the partnerships between Manchester United FC and Royal Antwerp FC, or Chelsea FC and Vitesse Arnhem. However, the increasing entry into football of investors, including state-backed investment funds, has meant this model has progressed to the logical next step, multiple clubs belonging to the same ownership group.
