Why not “try before you buy”?! Whilst a selling club will usually prefer to transfer a player that is surplus to requirement, if that’s not possible, loaning the player out can be attractive. If the ultimate aim is to transfer the player, then fixing the price (the transfer fee) and agreeing on what would trigger that becoming a permanent move (an event or a condition precedent) often proves to be a good “plan b”.
As ever, these clauses are rarely perfect, as was seen in the dispute between Leeds United and RasenBallsport Leipzig before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.[1]
