LaLiga Obtains a Legal Victory in the CVC Lawsuit against Rebel Clubs

On 27 February 2024, the Spanish Professional Football League (LaLiga) announced that the lawsuit filed by its member clubs, Real Madrid and Athletic Club, against their “Boost LaLiga” project with CVC Partners was unsuccessful. The decision was initially taken by a Madrid First Instance Court on 19 February 2024.

Introduction and Legal Background

This legal saga related to the CVC Partners deal started in August 2021, when LaLiga and Luxembourg-based private equity and investment advisory firm CVC Partners agreed to invest EUR 2.7 billion into the Spanish first division in exchange for roughly 10% of the competition’s rights for the next 50 years.
