Interview with Julien Sieveking, WADA Director of Legal Affairs

Julien, you are Director of Legal Affairs at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). What is your academic and professional background and what are your role and main tasks at WADA?

Unsurprisingly, my academic background is in the law, completed with a Masters in Sports Management and some executive programs over the years. Before joining WADA, I worked for UEFA as disciplinary counsel, and acted as Secretary General of the Swiss Sports Manager Association. I am also a lecturer in several Sports Law Masters programs around the globe.

Can you remind us how WADA defines doping?

As set out in the World Anti-Doping Code, doping is defined as the occurrence of one or more of the anti-doping rule violations set forth in the Code. In other words, doping is defined by a list of infractions. It is important to note that, out of the ten anti-doping rule violations found in the Code, there is only one that is the consequence of positive doping test. All other...
