On 23 May 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of Florian Thauvin (Thauvin) in his dispute with Tigres de la UANL (Tigres), awarding him EUR 10.5 million in compensation for wrongful termination of his employment contract. The CAS upheld FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) decision, while determining that the DRC lacked jurisdiction over Thauvin’s separate image rights contract, which was subject to a distinct arbitration agreement.

Facts and Procedure

The case arose from a dispute between Mexican football club Tigres de la UANL and former player Florian Thauvin following the early termination of his employment contract in January 2023. The contract, signed in April 2021, was set to last until 30 June 2026. Upon termination, Tigres paid Thauvin an indemnity of MXN 16,480,000 (approx.
