Football’s transfer system has long been defended by reference to its redistributive function. Jean-François Brocard and Christophe Lepetit examine whether existing solidarity mechanisms still meet that objective in an increasingly financialised football economy. Distinguishing between horizontal and vertical solidarity, they argue that the current framework remains insufficient and that more effective redistribution mechanisms are needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of professional football.
