
Digital communication has become an integral part of a football player’s professional identity, often triggering immediate contractual, disciplinary and reputational consequences. Existing legal and regulatory frameworks in football largely assume that public statements attributed to players are intentional and within their control. Recent incidents involving account hacks and unauthorized digital access expose a growing gap between these legal assumptions and digital reality.
This article examines digital misattribution as an overlooked governance risk in football. It argues that while disciplinary mechanisms are well developed, legal and strategic tools to address falsely attributed speech remain limited, allowing reputational damage to occur before responsibility can be clarified. The article further considers how emerging AI-driven impersonation technologies intensify this risk and highlights the need for preventive governance approaches beyond reactive legal enforcement
