Historically, Australian professional A-League clubs which operated under a salary cap environment would never engage in the transfer of players as they preferred signing players who were free from contract. Further, the registration framework that applied to the A-League did not allow for the transfer of players between A-League clubs. The Football Federation Australia (FFA) National Registration Regulations (NRR) refer to the inability of an A-League Club paying a transfer fee to another A-League Club.
