This is the second CAS award challenging a disciplinary decision from the Argentine Football Association (AFA), following the acknowledgment of the CAS jurisdiction in the Statutes approved in 2017. In this case, Newell’s Old Boys’ challenge was accepted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the decision of the AFA Disciplinary Appeals Tribunal was overturned.

The case was related to a point-deduction procedure conducted on the basis of “financial fair play” rules negotiated with the player’s union and enacted by the AFA in 2017.
