João Palhinha (the player), Sporting Clube de Portugal’s midfielder, was one of the stars that stood out in the Portuguese championship during the 2020-2021 season, not only for being one of the most promising players but also for being at the center of a legal controversy related to the sampling of his 5th yellow card.

In the match between Sporting Clube de Portugal and Boavista Futebol Clube, held on 26 January 2021, the player received his 5th yellow card in the competition. However, according to the player, his colleagues and the technical team of Sporting Clube de Portugal, the throw was not compatible with a yellow card. It should be noted that the referee’s action was immediately contested in the middle of the game.

However, and because it was a yellow card, even if the referee would recognize that he had wrongly showed, it could not have been withdrawn in the context of the game since the action does not admit the intervention of VAR.
