In fact, arbitration as an alternative method of settling disputes in sport was set up in Belgium by the Belgian Sports Arbitration Commission, which was created in the early 1990s by the Belgian Interfederal Olympics Committee (COIB).

In 2012, the Belgian Sports Arbitration Commission was replaced by the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport (CBAS), which took the form of a non-profit association (ASBL).
