New four-year deal brings the Australian national football teams (the Socceroos and Matildas) nearer to pay parity

On 6 November, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced the conclusion of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) closing the pay gap between men and women in Australian soccer.

Background

The pay disparity between men’s and women’s professional national football team players has been in the worldwide spotlight since the Norwegian women’s superstar Ada Hegerberg sat out the 2019 Women’s World Cup and the Danish women’s national team boycotted several games. Further, the United States of America’s national women’s team has recently sued its governing body United States Soccer, alleging gender discrimination in earnings and working conditions, through a class action lawsuit proceeding which was, in November 2019, approved by a Federal Judge.
