This article was motivated by the recent scenario where several top Australian coaches, including Ange Postecoglou of Glasgow Celtic and Kevin Muscat, formerly of Belgian club Sint-Truiden FC, faced regulatory hurdles with having their coaching badges recognised by UEFA or its member national federations. In order to understand and analyse these regulatory hurdles confronting both these Australian coaches and others, the author conducted a Q&A with the CEO of Football Coaches Australia (FCA) (with written input from James Kitching - formerly of FIFA and legal adviser to the FCA). Therefore, this article focuses on the current regulatory state of play concerning the recognition of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) professional coaching licence by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
