Due to a combination of factors, the phenomenon of multi-club ownership in football is rapidly growing. In many cases, the popularity of MCOs is due to the advantages these structures offer in terms of talent scouting, player development and player recruitment. In other instances, alternative motives may be equally or even more important. Regardless of the rationale behind each individual case, however, there is no doubt that MCOs have multiple ripple effects on the club football ecosystem as a whole.

For players, it may be argued that any mechanism that incentivises investment in adequate scouting and development is a positive element that facilitates the creation of new professional opportunities....
