Football is arguably the world’s most popular sport, attracting millions of international fans. Its popularity also means that players and fans come from various countries, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and religious and cultural backgrounds. In this sense, discrimination has always been a deeply enrooted phenomenon that affects our society at large, and football has never been an exception. For this reason, some years ago, FIFA decided to tackle this issue in the world of football by adopting a determined and strict stance to fight discrimination in football.
Discrimination has always been a hot topic in football and, despite all the campaigns against it, some problems persist. In this respect, FIFA’s position on the issue is unequivocal: there is no place for racism or any form of discrimination in football. However, while team sport is intended to be an exciting spectacle for all, players are often the target of discrimination by supporters. Given the variety of forms that discrimination can take, this article is intended to provide a deep analysis of the system of sanctions introduced by FIFA to tackle the discriminatory behaviour of the supporters during a match, which in great measure is due to the chants performed by them.
