The consequences of the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU) continue to be felt just as keenly in the world of sport as that of politics, not least from a competition law perspective. This article examines how EU and UK competition law will apply in the UK post-Brexit, with a particular focus on the football industry and the forthcoming FIFA Football Agent Regulations.

How does EU and UK competition law apply in the UK post-Brexit?

By way of brief summary, the UK competition rules prohibit:

  • Agreements and concerted practices between independent businesses which have as their object or effect the prevention, restriction, or distortion of competition within the UK; and,
  • Conduct that amounts to an “abuse” of a dominant position in the relevant market and affects trade within the UK.
