CAF – On the Road to Compliance

On 15 October 2020, the 3rd FIFA Compliance Summit was held by videoconference. On this occasion, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) presented its latest compliance developments. The author wishes to use this article to better explain the issues and difficulties encountered by CAF, by sharing with all football stakeholders the genesis and path taken by CAF to take compliance to the next level.

CAF and Compliance: An Origin Story

 

CAF was founded on 8 February 1957 by its first four members, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Sudan.  

In his election program, former CAF President Ahmad Ahmad included the creation of a Legal Affairs Division and a Compliance Division. This was easily accomplished and in 2018, the CAF Legal Affairs Division was established.

Indeed, it became more necessary than ever for CAF to equip itself with appropriate institutional tools given the challenges it was facing, not only in terms of governance but also in protecting its interests vis-à-vis third...
