An Emerging Trend in the Australian A-League

The combination of the recent corporatisation and huge exponential financial growth of the football market worldwide has made the multi-club ownership strategy increasingly popular with big clubs, investment groups and corporate entities internationally.

This is exemplified by the emergence of leading multi-ownership type market players such as the City Football Group (CFG) who own such clubs as Manchester City FC, Yokohama F. Marinos (Yokohama Marinos), and Melbourne City FC (Melbourne City) based in the Australian A-League.

The CFG’s unique multi-ownership club strategy is best exemplified by Don Dransfield, CFG’s Director of Operations Development (picture), who stated recently:

“Our strategy very much is to look at the underlying synergies and network benefits that result from being able to operate both across multiple geographies and across multiple elements of the value chain within each of those geographies.”
